There are two forms, incorporeal and corporeal. An incorporeal (or non-corporeal) version does not resemble any living creature. A corporeal version takes on the form of an animal. Patronus Quiz: All Of The Known Forms (Animals) Of Harry Potter Characters

Here are some of the confirmed Patronus forms from the series. These have been revealed on Pottermore and also throughout the books and movies.

Harry Potter (Stag)

Harry Potter’s took the form of a stag. This is the same form of his father’s Animagus and Patronus. Harry was first able to conjure at the age of 13, which was seen as an impressive feat. A stag is a male deer and we got to see Harry use it several times during the series.

Hermione Granger (Otter)

Hermione Granger’s took the form of an otter. JK Rowling has revealed that her favorite animal is an otter, which is why she gave Hermione that as a Patronus.

Ron Weasley (Jack Russell Terrier)

Ron Weasley’s took the form of a Jack Russell Terrier. During an interview, JK Rowling revealed that she picked this for Ron because her own family has a Jack Russell Terrier as a pet.

Also, Jack Russell Terriers are known to chase around otters, which was some subtle foreshadowing for Ron and Hermione’s relationship and eventual romance in the books.

James Potter (Stag)

James Potter’s took the form of a Stag. This is similar to his Animagus form and is also the male version of his wife’s, which takes the form of a doe.

Lily Potter (Doe)

Lily Potter’s took the form of a Doe. This is the female form of her husband’s Patronus.

Severus Snape (Doe)

Severus Snape’s took the form of a Doe. As we found out at the end of the series, this is because Snape has been in love with Lily Potter for his whole life.

During an interview, Rowling revealed that Snape is the only Death Eater who could conjure the charm. This is obviously because Snape was not actually a Death Eater but only pretending to be.

Albus Dumbledore (Phoenix)

Albus Dumbledore’s took the form of a phoenix. This coincides with Dumbledore’s prized pet, Fawkes.

It is also possible that the Phoenix is Dumbledore’s Animagus form but I don’t think that has ever been confirmed or denied by J.K Rowling.

Remus Lupin (Wolf)

Remus Lupin’s took the form of a wolf. On Pottermore, Rowling makes it clear that it takes the form of a regular wolf and not a werewolf.

Nymphadora Tonks (Jack Rabbit & Then Wolf)

Nymphadora Tonks’ took the form of a wolf. It was revealed during Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that Tonks’ Patronus form changed after she fell in love with Remus Lupin.

For those wondering, Tonks’ Patronus took the form of a Jack Rabbit before it changed. This tells us that Patronus’ can end up changing, so you aren’t necessarily stuck with the same one for life.

Minerva McGonagall (Cat)

Minerva McGonagall’s took the form of a tabby cat. This is similar to her Animagus form. McGonagall used the spell in the Deathly Hallows novel in order to send a message.

Dolores Umbridge (Cat)

Dolores Umbridge’s took the form of a cat. Rowling noted on Pottermore that Umbridge is one of the few Witches or Wizards with “questionable morals” who is able to successfully conjure the charm.

Ginny Weasley (Horse)

Ginny Weasley’s took the form of a horse. The Order of the Phoenix movie shows Ginny successfully casting the charm.

Seamus Finnigan (Fox)

Seamus Finnigan’s took the form of a Fox. This was revealed in the Deathly Hallows novel, during the Battle of Hogwarts.

Luna Lovegood (Hare)

Luna Lovegood’s took the form of a Hare, which is similar to a rabbit. The Order of the Phoenix movie shows Luna successfully casting the charm.

Arthur Weasley (Weasel)

Arthur Weasley’s took the form of a Weasel. This was revealed in the Deathly Hallows novel when Arthur used his to send a message to Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

Kingsley Shacklebolt (Lynx)

Kingsley Shacklebolt’s took the form of a Lynx. During the Deathly Hallows Part 1 movie, Kingsley’s is shown to be non-corporeal but in the books, it is revealed to be a Lynx.

For anybody wondering, a Lynx is a medium-sized wild cat.

Cho Chang (Swan)

Cho Chang’s took the form of a Swan. This was revealed during a meeting of Dumbledore’s Army.

Ernie Macmillan (Boar)

Ernie Macmillan’s took the form of a Boar. This was revealed in the Deathly Hallows novel during the Battle of Hogwarts.

Aberforth Dumbledore (Goat)

Aberforth Dumbledore’s took the form of a Goat. He is known for being the brother of Albus.

Fred & George Weasley (Magpie)

Fred & George Weasley’s took the form of a magpie, which is a type of bird. This was revealed by JK Rowling on Twitter.

Hedley Fleetwood (Woolly Mammoth)

Hedley Fleetwood’s Patronus took the form of a woolly mammoth, which is extremely rare. This was revealed in the Wonderbook: Book of Spells.

Symposia Rawle (Ladybird)

Symposia Rawle’s Patronus took the shape of a ladybird, which is a small beetle. This was revealed in the Wonderbook: Book of Spells.

Illyius (Mouse)

Illyius’ took the form of a mouse. This was revealed in the Wonderbook: Book of Spells.

Constance Pickering (Unicorn)

Constance Pickering’s took the form of a unicorn. She worked for the British Ministry of Magic and is known from the Harry Potter: Wizards Unite video game.

What Is Draco Malfoy’s Patronus?

On her website, J.K Rowling revealed that Draco did not know how to cast a Patronus charm. As a result, he does not have an official form. While saying that, some fans have speculated that Draco would be able to cast the charm in his later years, especially after he had children. We will update this section if J.K Rowling ever officially lets us know what his would be.

What Is Sirius Black’s Patronus?

Many fans assume that it would be a large black dog, which is the same as his Animagus form. While saying that, J.K Rowling has never confirmed this to be true. It would make sense though as James Potter’s was confirmed to be Stag, which is the same as his Animagus form.

What Is Neville Longbottom’s Patronus?

In the Deathly Hallows book, it was revealed that Neville could only cast a non-Corporeal Patronus, which means that it does not take the form of any animal. If I had to pick for him, I would guess something like a dog as he proved his bravery throughout the series. It could also be something that loves plants, like a guinea pig.
