The Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is based in Massachusetts, United States. Similar to Hogwarts, there are four houses at Ilvermorny, where students can belong to. Here are all of the houses that are at the Ilvermorny School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry. Like Hogwarts, there are four Great Houses and they are all very different. We do our best to explain the different traits of each and also the key members that are known.
House Thunderbird
House Thunderbird is named after the magical creature that shares the same name. A Thunderbird is a large bird, which is a close relative to the Pheonix.
It is said that members of the house represent the soul. It is also a house that favors adventurers.
Notable Members Of House Thunderbird
1) Chadwick Boot: He was one of the four founders of Ilvermorny school and the founder of the Thunderbird house. Chawick wrote several books, including the series, Chadwick’s Charms. He is the brother of House Wampus founder, Webster Boot.
2) Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein: She is best known for being one of the main characters of the Fantastic Beasts series. She is an Auror and eventually married Newt Scamander. In the Fantastic Beasts movies, she is played by Katherine Waterston.
3) J.K Rowling revealed on Twitter that she is a member of House Thunderbird.
4) Evanna Lynch revealed on Twitter that she is a member of House Thunderbird. She plays Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies.
5) Katie Leung revealed on Instagram that she is a member of House Thunderbird. Katie played Cho Chang in the Harry Potter movies.
House Wampus
House Wampus is named after the magical creature that shares the same name, the Wampus Cat. The Wampus is a magical cat that is the same size as a mountain lion or a cougar.
It is said that members of the house represent the body. It is also a house that favors warriors.
Notable Members Of House Wampus
1) Webster Boot: He was one of the four founders of Ilvermorny school and the founder of the Wampus house. He named the house after his favorite animal. He is the brother of House Thunderbird founder, Chadwick Boot.
2) Jacob Kowalski, from Fantastic Beasts, would have been a member of the house according to J.K Rowling. In the Fantastic Beasts movies, Kowalski is played by Dan Fogler.
House Pukwudgie
House Pukwudgie is named after the magical creature of the same name, the Pukwudgie. These are distant relatives to goblins and they are known to hunt with arrows that are poisonous.
It is said that members of the house represent the heart. It is also a house that favors those who are healers.
Notable Members Of House Pukwudgie
1) James Steward: He was one of the four founders of Ilvermorny school and the founder of the Pukwudgie house. He named it after William, who was a Pukwudgie that he heard about from his wife, Isolt Sayre (who is the founder of Horned Serpent house). Despite being a founder, James had no magical abilities.
2) Queenie Goldstein: She is best known for being one of the main characters of the Fantastic Beasts series. She is also a proud Pukwudgie. In the Fantastic Beasts movies, Queenie is played by Alison Sudol.
House Horned Serpent
House Horned Serpent is named after serpents that look like dragons. They have long teeth, horns, and various other magical powers.
It is said that members of the house represent the mind. It is also a house that favors those who are scholars.
Notable Members Of House Horned Serpent
1) Isolt Sayre: She was one of the four founders of Ilvermorny school and the founder of the Horned Serpent house. The house was named after Isolt befriended a horned serpent during her travels. She is the wife of James Steward, who is the founder of the House Pukwudgie.
2) Seraphina Picquery: She is best known for her appearance in the Fantastic Beasts series. Seraphina was the President of the Magical Congress of the United States of America. In the Fantastic Beasts movies, she is played by Carmen Ejogo.
Some Additional Ilvermorny Facts
Here are some additional facts about the school that we could not fit in the space above.
1) The Ilvermorny sorting ceremony is different from what fans are used to seeing at Hogwarts, with the sorting hat.
Instead of a hat, there is a symbol on the ground that students need to stand on, one-by-one. The specific house will react on the symbol, which ultimately indicates which house that the person is in.
Also, if more than one symbol reacts when a student steps on it, that means they get to choose which one that they want to go to.
2) First-year students at Ilvermorny don’t get their wands until after they are sorted into their house.
This is a tradition that has been with the school for many years. This is also different from Hogwarts, where students are able to buy their wands before they get to school.
3) The staff of the school is made up of a lot of members of the Pukwudgie house.
This is based on Isolt Sayre’s previous run-in with a Pukwudgie.
4) The school is located at the very top of Mount Greylock.
This is a real mountain that is located in Massachusetts. This is the highest point in all of Massachusetts.
5) The School Has A Reputation For Being The Least ‘Elitist’ Of The Wizarding Schools
This was revealed by J.K Rowling in her writing about the school She says that it is considered to be the most democratic of all the different Wizarding schools
6) The School Was Founded In 1627
The was 637 years after Hogwarts was founded. This also makes it the youngest of all the different Wizarding schools.
