Box Office And Critical Review

1) The movie reportedly had an opening weekend of $93.7 million in the United States and Canada. At the time, this was the third-highest opening weekend behind Spider-Man and Shrek 2. The movie also broke the record in the United Kingdom for the biggest single-day opening in history. This came as a result of the movie making £5.3 million on the day that it opened.

2) According to Box Office Mojo, the movie has grossed $796,907,323 Worldwide (as of 2019).

3) According to Box Office Mojo, this ended up as the 6th highest-grossing movie of 2004. It was beaten by Shrek 2, Spider-Man 2, The Passion of the Christ, Meet The Fockers, and The Incredibles.

4) Legendary film critic, Roger Ebert, gave the movie 3.5 stars and said it was not as good as the first two. Ebert did say that was still “delightful, amusing and sophisticated”.

5) The movie has a 90% rating on the TOMATOMETER on Rotten Tomatoes after 257 critical reviews. It also has an audience score of 86% after more than a million votes (as of 2019).

6) The movie has a 7.9/10 user rating from IMDB (as of 2019).

7) The movie was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Original Music Score and Best Visual Effects. This was the second Harry Potter movie to receive nominations for the Academy Awards (along with the first movie). The movie didn’t end up winning any of the awards that it was nominated for.

Directors Notes

8) Chris Columbus did not return for this movie after directing the first two films. In an interview, he revealed that he turned it down because he hadn’t seen his kids for dinner in over 2 and a half years due to the previous movies. Columbus did stay on as a producer for this movie though.

9) Guillermo Del Toro revealed in an interview with MTV that he was approached to direct the film. He ended up turning it down

10) IMDB says that M. Night Shyamalan was offered to direct the movie but ended up turning it down to focus on the Village.

11) The final three options for director came down to Callie Khouri, Kenneth Branagh (who played Gilderoy Lockhart) and Alfonso Cuarón. They eventually went with Cuarón.

12) IMDB says that Cuarón hadn’t read the books or seen the movies when he was offered the job as director. It was Guillermo del Toro who ended up convincing him to read the books.

13) According to IMDB, Cuarón had a clause in his contract that said he couldn’t swear in front of kids on set.

Casting Notes

14) This is the first movie that Michael Gambon took over as Albus Dumbledore. This came as a result of the passing of Richard Harris, who had previously played Dumbledore.

15) In an interview, Ian McKellen revealed that he turned down the role of Dumbledore. This was because Richard Harris had previously called him a “dreadful” actor.

16) According to IMDB, Tilda Swinton was originally offered the role of Professor Trelawney but she ended up declining. Tilda has played some big roles in her career, including ‘the Ancient One’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

17) This movie was David Thewlis’ first appearance as Remus Lupin. He had previously auditioned for the role of Professor Quirrel but did not get the role. Thewlis would go on to play the character of Lupin in all of the subsequent films in the series.
