1) What are Neville’s parents names?

Neville’s parents were Frank and Alice Longbottom, who were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange when he was younger. As a result, Neville lived with his grandmother for his childhood. Due to Neville’s parents being able to use magic, Neville is a pureblood Wizard.

2) How many points did Dumbledore award to Gryffindor in 1st year for Neville standing up to his friends?

Dumbledore awarded Gryffindor 10 points for Neville standing up to Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. This came as a result of Neville trying to stop them from sneaking out of the Gryffindor common room. These points ultimately helped Gryffindor win the House Cup that year.

3) What form did Neville’s boggart take?

Neville’s boggart took the form of Professor Snape, who he said scared him more than anything else. Neville used the riddikulus spell and as a result, Snape put a dress on. This was a great example of how other students viewed and ultimately feared Professor Snape for most of the series.

4) What was the name of Neville’s pet toad?

Neville’s pet toad was named ‘Trevor’, which he lost on many occasions. The first time that we meet Neville, he is searching for Trevor on the Hogwarts Express.

5) Who did Neville take to the Yule Ball?

Neville ended up taking Ginny Weasley to the Yule Ball. This came after Neville originally asked Hermione, who had to decline because she was going with Viktor Krum. Neville ended up accidentally stepping on Ginny’s toes while they were dancing together as revealed in the fourth book.

6) Who was the actor that played Neville in the Harry Potter movies?

Matthew Lewis played Neville in the movies, which was the first movie that he had ever been in. Many people talk about the physical transformation that Lewis underwent from the first to the final movie. Prior to getting the role of Neville, Matthew had appeared on a few television shows.

7) What does Neville give Harry to breathe underwater during the Triwizard Tournament

Neville gives Harry Gillyweed to help breath underwater. As a result, this helps Harry complete the second task of the Triwizard Tournament. Along with allowing you to breathe underwater, it also adds webbing to your fingers and toes. As a result, swimming becomes much easier.

8) What was Neville’s favorite subject at Hogwarts?

Neville loved Herbology during his time at Hogwarts and later would become the Herbology Professor at the school. Neville took over the job from Professor Sprout, who had been the teacher for many years at Hogwarts and taught Neville. We see Neville use his knowledge of Herboloy on a few occasions during the series, including when he helps Harry with Gillyweed during the Triwizard Tournament.

9) Who told Neville to “Stand Down” during his speech to Voldemort?

Neville was told by Seamus Finnigan to stand down prior to his speech to Voldemort, which he didn’t listen to. Neville ends up delivering a passionate speech to Lord Voldemort, which is one of the best scenes of the entire series.

Neville married Hannah Abbott, who was a fellow member of Dumbledore’s Army. A common misconception is that Neville married Luna Lovegood but this is not the case. Hannah was in the same-year at Hogwarts as Neville but was in Hufflepuff. She became a member of Dumbledore’s Army and even fought in the Battle of Hogwarts. During an interview, Rowling revealed that Abbot became the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron Pub and the couple lived on top of it.

Some Additional Neville Longbottom Facts

Here are some more tidbits that we couldn’t fit on our Neville Longbottom quiz but found interesting. This includes how the character got his name and more on the actor that plays him.

More Details On The Name Of Neville Longbottom

Here is some of the backstory on how the character got his name and other ones that were considered.

1) According to JK Rowling, Neville’s original last name was going to be ‘Sidebottom’ but she ended up deciding against it. Sidebottom is a not-very-common surname in England and Australia.

2) Rowling also considered the last name of ‘Pupp’ for Neville’s character. ‘Neville Pupp’ was listed in a notebook where Rowling wrote out some early concepts for the characters. She ultimately decided on Neville Longbottom for the character name.

3) For any Lord of the Rings fans, ‘Longbottom’ was the name of a place in the Shire. ‘Longbottom’ is also a region in England. Both of these seem to be the inspiration for the last name of Neville.

4) Longbottom is also a popular last name around Bristol, England where Rowling spent some of her childhood. That could be another reason why she ultimately decided upon Longbottom for Neville’s last name.

5) It is also possible that Rowling drew inspiration for his first name from Neville Chamberlain, who was the British Prime Minister from 1937 to 1940. This has never been confirmed though and is speculation from fans.

More Details About The Neville Character

Here are additional tidbits about the character that we couldn’t fit on our Neville Longbottom quiz but found interesting.

6) Neville Longbottom’s birthday is July 30th, 1980, which happens to one day before Harry Potter and JK Rowling’s birthdays. This birthday plays a large role in the prophecy in the series. If Harry was born a day later, Neville would have been dubbed as the ‘Chosen One’.

7) Neville Longbottom’s wand’s core was made of Unicorn Tail hair. Other wizards with this type of core include Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy, Cedric Diggory, and Remus Lupin. This was Neville’s second wand after his first one was broken in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.

8) JK Rowling has revealed that she strongly considered putting Neville and Luna Lovegood together as a couple. She ended up deciding to go into other directions for both of them. A relationship was teased between them in the films but it didn’t end in marriage between them. As noted in our quiz, Neville ended up marrying Hannah Abbot and Luna married Rolf Scamander (who is the grandson of Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts).

9) Neville is left-handed and can be seen holding his wand in his left hand throughout the series.

10) Neville asked to be sorted into Hufflepuff but the Sorting Hat put him into Gryffindor.

11) Even though his favorite subject was Herbology, Neville was also excellent at Charms. He was the second person in Dumbledore’s Army to master the Shield charm, which was only behind Hermione. That shows us that Neville had other skills than just Herbology.

12) After Hogwarts, Neville became the Herbology Professor at Hogwarts.

More Details About The Actor, Matthew Lewis

Matthew Lewis became a big star after landing the role of Neville. Here are some additional tidbits about Lewis from his time playing the role.

13) Harry Potter was not Matthew Lewis’ first experience as an actor. His first acting role was in the TV movie, Some Kind of Life. Lewis was only 6 years old when this came out in 1995. He also appeared in some British TV shows in the late 1990s, including Heartbeat, Dalziel and Pascoe, and Where the Heart Is. As a result, he had a solid amount of experience prior to the filming of the Harry Potter series.

14) According to an interview with Helena Bonham Carter (who played Bellatrix Lestrange), she accidentally perforated Lewis’ eardrum with her wand during a scene. This caused some internal bleeding in Lewis.

15) Matthew Lewis took the Pottermore quiz and ended up getting sorted into the Hufflepuff house.

16) During an interview, Lewis revealed that he had to wear a fat suit for most of the films.

17) Lewis has also revealed that he was not able to get any dental work done for his entire 10-year stint of filming the series. He got hit teeth fixed as soon as filming was done for the final movie.

18) In an interview, Lewis revealed that he was disappointed the producers didn’t include the scene where Neville visited his parents at St. Mungo’s hospital. They originally filmed this scene for Order of the
Phoenix
but it ended up getting cut from the final movie. Lewis feels like this would have been an important scene for Neville and his character.

19) Lewis revealed in a 2018 interview that he had a massive crush on Emma Watson while they were filming the first few movies.
