Harry Potter Spells List

Here are some more details about the spells and charms that we used in the quiz above.

Accio

This is also known as a summoning charm that brings an object towards the caster. Accio was used a ton of times throughout the series but the most notable time was when Harry used it on the Triwizard Cup, which had been made into a portkey. Using the spell allowed Harry to escape from Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters while holding onto Cedric Diggory’s body.

Alohomora

This is also known as the unlocking charm that is used on things like doors and windows. The most famous use was Lord Voldemort using Alohomora to break into the Potter residence before he murdered James and Lily Potter.

Avada Kedavra

This is also known as a killing curse and is one of three Unforgivable Curses used in the Dark Arts. The curse is represented by a flash of green light. Lord Voldemort is the one who used this spell the most, killing many Witches and Wizards with it.

Crucio

This is also known as the Cruciatus curse and is one of three Unforgivable Curses used in the Dark Arts. When cast, it inflicts Excruciating pain on the victim. It is used mostly for torture purposes in order for the caster to get what they want. Probably the most famous case was when Death Eaters used the curse on Frank and Alice Longbottom in order to find out information on Lord Voldemort’s whereabouts. Frank and Alice were tortured into insanity, which led to them having to spend the rest of their lives in n St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

Expecto Patronum

This is also known as the Patronus, which serves as a powerful defensive charm. The spell conjures a positive energy force, which usually takes the form of an animal. This primarily protects against things like Dementors. This spell played a major role in the entire series and we saw Harry use it a bunch of times.

Expelliarmus

This is also known as the disarming charm, which forces what someone is holding out of their hand. This was used multiple times throughout the series but is mostly used in duels to disarm someone from their wand. The charm is represented by a flash of red light.

Imperio

This is also known as the Imperius Curse and is one of the three Unforgivable Curses used in the Dark Arts. The spell places the victim completely under the caster’s control. If you successfully cast this at someone, they will say and do whatever you tell them. Harry used this curse during his break-in to Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Some people are able to resist this curse if their mind is strong enough.

Lumos

This is also known as the Wand-Lighting Charm, which allows the person casting to see in the dark. We saw this spell used on multiple occasions when Harry and his friends wanted to see in the dark. A fun fact is that JK Rowling created a charity named Lumos, which focuses on helping disadvantaged children in orphanages.

Obliviate

This is also known as the memory charm and is used to erase specific memories from someone’s mind. The spell is used a lot by the Ministry of Magic as they try to keep the magical world a secret from Muggles. As the name suggests, it obliviates memories from someone’s mind.

Protego

This is also known as a shield charm. The caster is protected by an invisible shield that blocks and reflects spells. One of the most famous uses of this charm was when Harry was doing Occlumency training with Professor Snape. Harry defended himself against Snape’s Legilimency, which caused him to see some of Snape’s bad memories from when he was a child.

Riddikulus

This is also known as the Boggart-Banishing Spell, which is used to get rid of a Boggart. This spell was highlighted during Harry’s third year at Hogwarts where Professor Lupin taught the class how to defeat Boggarts.

Sectumsempra

This is a curse that was created by Severus Snape in his youth. This is a dark curse that cuts/ slashes the caster’s opponent. We see this in the Half-Blood Prince where Harry cast it at Draco Malfoy and seriously wounded him. Luckily, Professor Snape was around to heal Malfoy or it could have killed him.

Stupefy

This is also known as the Stunning Spell, which is used to stun your opponent and render them unconscious. We saw Harry cast this spell on multiple occasions, including most of his fighting scenes.

Wingardium Leviosa

This is also called a levitation charm which is used to make things fly or levitate. We saw this introduced early in the series when Hermione was the first student in the charms class to master the spell.
