Potion Quiz Questions & Answers

Here are all of the potion trivia questions and answers. We have also provided some additional context for each.

1) What Is The Name Of The Potion That Temporarily Grants The User Good Luck?

The answer is Felix Felicis, which is also referred to as “liquid luck”. Fans should be familiar with this from the Half-Blood Prince. In the book and movie, Harry pretends to give Ron Weasley the potion, which ultimately helps him gain his confidence back for Quidditch. Harry later uses it to get the memory needed from Professor Slughorn, which he was hiding.

2) What Is The Name Of The Ingredient That Comes From The Stomach Of A Goat And Also Can Act As An Antidote To Poisons?

The answer is Bezoar and students at Hogwarts learn about it in their first year class. Bezoar’s are mostly used as antidotes to common poisons.

3) What Is The Name Of The Potion That Relieves The Effects Of Lycanthropy?

The answer is Wolfsbane Potion which can relieve the effects of Lycanthropy but does not cure it. It essentially allows Werewolves to keep their minds when there is a full moon. Instead of becoming a wild beast, the werewolf who drinks the potion will sleep through the process instead.

4) How Many Uses Are There For Dragons Blood?

There are 12 uses for Dragons Blood and Professor Dumbledore is credited with discovering them.

5) What Is The Name Of The Potion That Forces The User To Tell The Truth?

Veritaserum is a truth serum used to force people to tell the truth. It is very effective but there are ways to resist it, including through occlumency and antidotes.

6) What Does The Pepperup Potion Do?

This helps cure the common cold. It is used a handful of times during the books.

7) What Do You Get After Mixing Powdered Root Of Asphodel With Wormwood?

When these items are combined, it creates the Draught of Living Death potion. Professor Snape asks Harry this same question during the first book and movie in order to test him.

Fans have looked more into this and it turns out that this question from Snape was actually a hidden message to Harry. An Asphodel is a lily that means “My regrets follow you to the grave“. Wormwood also translates to “absence” or “bitter sorrow”. If you combine these, Snape was essentially telling Harry right away that he bitterly regrets the death of his mother, Lily Potter.

8) What O.W.L Grade Did Harry Potter Get In Potions Class?

Harry ended up getting an E for Exceeded Expectations on his Potions O.W.L. Ron Weasley also received an E and Hermione Granger received an O for Outstanding.

9) Which of These Is NOT An Ingredient In Polyjuice Potion?

The answer is Rose oil as Polyjuice requires leeches, fluxweed, and boomslang skin to brew. We got to see Polyjuice used many times throughout the series. This potion allows you to turn yourself into someone else.

10) Who Is The Author Of The Advanced Potion Making Textbook?

The other of the book is Libatius Borage. He also wrote Asiatic Anti-Venoms and Have Yourself a Fiesta in a Bottle!

List Of All The Harry Potter Potions Masters

Here is a list of all the known professors of the subject:

Severus Snape

Severus Snape is the most well known Potions professor. This is due to him teaching the subject for most of Harry Potter’s time at Hogwarts. As a teacher, he was known to be very strict and had very high standards for his students. An example of this is him requiring all students to score a “O” (Outstanding) on their O.W.L exam for the class in order to move on to his advanced classes. In other classes, students were able to advance after scoring an “E” (Exceeds Expectations).

Horace Slughorn

Horace Slughorn had two stints as the potions professor at Hogwarts. He taught the subject for 50 years before retiring when Severus Snape took over. Slughorn also taught after Snape had moved to become the Defense Against The Dark Arts Professor. He was known to show extreme favoritism to students that were in his ‘Slug Club’. His most famous students were Harry Potter and also Tom Riddle.

Professor Swoopstikes

There is a portrait of Professor Swoopstikes at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This shows him as being a former Potions Master at Hogwarts.

Additional Potion Facts

1) J.K Rowling has revealed in interviews that Chemistry was her least-favorite subject when she was growing up. As a result, this led to her creation of Potions class and Professor Snape.

2) Students have to score an ‘E’ (Exceeds Expectations) or an ‘O’ (Outstanding) on their O.W.L and N.E.W.T exams in order to be accepted into Auror training.

3) Students also need to score an ‘E’ or an ‘O’ if they want to become a Healer.

4) This class is directly related to both Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. This is because many of the ingredients needed for potions come from either magical creatures or plants.
